Today, treat yourself to a full-day journey to Sanchi. The Sanchi hill is divided into shelves, including Stupa 2 on the bottom shelf, Stupa 1, Stupa 3, the 5th century Gupta Temple No.17, and the 7th century temple No.18 on the middle shelf, and a later monastery on the apex. The Satavahanas added the railing encircling Stupa 2, which is carved with iconic depictions of the Buddha. Sir John Marshall lauded the nearby Gupta temple no.17 as one of the most logically structured temples in Indian architecture. Though tiny, it served as a model for the technical concepts that guided the construction of an Indian temple throughout the early mediaeval period. The Buddhas in the perambulatory encircling Stupa 1 are not of the same era as the Stupa but are from the Gupta dynasty in the mid-5th century AD. The monastery and the temple with the tall pillars close to Stupa 1, as well as the temple near the monastery on the crowning shelf, demonstrate the growth of the architectural form after the Gupta temple of the fifth century.
