Arrival in Merida. Your local guide will transport you to the accommodation. The rest of the day is free to do as you like. In Marida, spend the night in a hotel.
Today, after breakfast, you will go on a full-day tour of the archaeological sites of Uxmal and Kabah. First, we'll go to the Uxmal ruins, one of the most well-known ancient Mayan towns. In Maya, "Uxmal" means "three times constructed." The tour will describe in detail the Puuc architectural style of structures such as the Nun's Quadrangle, the Ball Court, the Turtle House, and the Governor Palace. This Puuc style is extremely ornamented and ornate. It gets its name from the Puuc hills, which are found in the area. The Governor Palace is the most well-known edifice in Uxmal since itan the outstanding specimen of the Puuc style. It was regarded as the most magnificent structure in Mesoamerica. Following our Uxmal trip, you will visit the archaeological site of Kabah, a Mayan name that means "lord of a powerful hand." A "sacbeh," or white road, connects Kabah to Uxmal. Kabah is one of the Puuc Route's stations, and there are several monuments here featuring carved masks of the Mayans' rain god, Chaac. Due to the lack of cenotes in this location, Mayans were forced to construct their own cisterns and pray to their God for rain. Your final stop before returning to Merida will be a restaurant for a fantastic regional supper. In Marida, spend the night in a hotel. (B,L)
Today, after breakfast. You will travel southeast of Merida to the ruins of the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza gets its name from the Mayan terms Chi (mouth), Chen (hole or well), and Itza (Itza people). These Mayan phrases indicate "At the mouth of the Well of the Itza people." The tour will be guided by an expert and qualified guide who will describe in detail the exquisite architecture of the structures and the Mayan way of life. To get to the Sacred Cenote, cross a "Sac beh," or white walkway used for ceremonial purposes. The Mayans thought of this cenote as a gateway to the underworld. You will also see the Temple of the Thousand Columns, the Observatory, the Ball Court, and other significant structures in Chichen Itza. Then, after a lengthy tour around the magnificent Mayan metropolis and new wonder of the world, you will eat a superb Yucatecan meal. We will transport you to Cancun after lunch.
